Dental Care 101

Vet approved tips for pet dental care

How often should I brush my pet’s teeth?

Ideally you should be brushing your pet’s teeth daily but as a minimum, you should be aiming for 2-3 times per week. Always use a pet safe toothpaste and a soft bristled brush.

What does bad breath mean in pets?

Persistent stinky breath could indicate plaque build up, gum disease or an infection. In some more serious cases, it could signal that your pet has an underlying health issue. If you notice persistent bad breath, please visit your veterinary practice. It’s best not to ignore it.

Do pets really need dental care?

Yes, just like us, pets are at risk of plaque, tartar, gum disease and tooth loss if their dental hygiene is neglected. Our ProDen range is aimed at helping control plaque, tartar and overall oral hygiene.

What are the signs of dental problems in pets?

Watch out for the below as they may be signs of dental problems in pets:

· Bad breath

· Red or swollen gums

· Drooling

· Difficulty eating

· Pawing at the mouth

· Loose or missing teeth

What causes dental disease in pets?

Like us, dental disease in pets often starts with plaque which can harden into tartar. This can lead to inflammation, infection and tooth loss. Regular cleaning helps get rid of the plaque and can prevent dental disease.

How can I help maintain my pet’s dental hygiene?

You can support their dental hygiene by:

· Brushing their teeth regularly

· Offering dental chews or treats

· Providing dental toys

· Feeding a diet designed for oral care

· Using water additives

Can dental disease impact my pet’s overall health?

Yes, along with the potential of dental disease that can cause pain and discomfort, the bacteria from the mouth can spread through the bloodstream which could affect the heart, kidneys or liver if left untreated. If you suspect dental disease, please contact your vet.

Are dental chews enough on their own to prevent dental disease?

Dental Chews can help reduce plaque, but they shouldn’t be used as a replacement for brushing your pet’s teeth. Use them alongside brushing and a healthy diet.
