Understanding your pet’s prescription

What is POM-V?

POM-V stands for Prescription Only Medicine - Veterinarian. These medicines can only be prescribed by a qualified veterinary professional, following an assessment of your pet's health needs. To purchase POM-V products on Animed, you must first obtain a valid written prescription from your vet.

Why do I need a prescription?

POM-V medicines are specialised treatments that must be used safely. A vet prescribes them to ensure the right medicine, dose, and monitoring for your pet's health. By law, medication for your pet can only be dispensed by us if we are in receipt of a prescription from a UK registered vet for the item(s) you require.

Can I order a repeat prescription?

Vets can write repeat prescriptions to be used a number of times from the date of signing for up to 6 months (or less depending on the validity stated). Repeat prescriptions are not valid for Controlled Drugs and will not be accepted. The total amount of medication supplied cannot exceed what is written on the prescription, and your vet will decide how often your pet needs to be reassessed.

You can order medication using a repeat prescription as long as the first dispense takes place within the prescription's validity period. Repeat prescriptions are not sent automatically, each time you need more medication, you’ll need to place a new order with us.

If your prescription allows repeats and is within its validity period, you can order multiple times up to the amount stated, but you must reorder each time. If the prescription expires before the first dispense in made, a new prescription from your vet will be required.

If the first dispense takes place during the prescription validity period, the remaining repeats on the prescription may be dispensed beyond the validity period.

What if my prescription is rejected?

Make sure your prescription is valid and all the information is correct. If it’s not in date, or there are errors, we can’t process your order.

If there is a problem with your prescription, you will be notified by email.

How much is a vet prescription?

Most vets will charge for a prescription. Charges will vary so you may want to ask your practice how much it will cost.

How long is a pet’s prescription valid for?

Most prescriptions are only valid for a maximum of six months from the date they are signed (some can be for less – it’s important you check your prescription very carefully or check with your veterinary practice).

Prescriptions for controlled drugs are only valid for 28 days. Once you have used up a prescription, a new one will be required.

Why do I need to register my pet?

If you are ordering products with a legal type category of NFA-VPS, POM-VPS or POM-V (Prescription Medication), you will be prompted to register your pet's details with us OR select a pre-existing pet during the checkout process.

We have to match any medication with the correct animal to ensure the treatment is suitable, dispensed safely, and supplied in line with veterinary and legal requirements. This helps us make sure your pet receives the right medication every time.

You can register your pet's details in 'My Account' under 'My Pets'.

Can I register multiple pets?

Yes. If you have multiple pets you’ll be ordering for, you’ll need to register all of them.

You can register your pet's details in 'My Account' under 'My Pets'.

Register your pet today

Don't forget to register your pet and upload their prescription. This helps us ensure prescription medication is safely and accurately matched to the correct pet. If you're ordering for more than one pet, each pet will need to be registered individually.

If you have multiple prescriptions, please upload separate images of each one. Providing clear uploads helps our team review the information efficiently and ensures your order can be reviewed and processed without delay.

Prescription regulations

Some products you may wish to buy are medicines which by law require a Veterinary Prescription; these are classified as POM-V (Prescription Only Medicines). We can only dispense POM-V products upon receipt of a valid written veterinary prescription. Once received, we will check the prescription, before dispensing the medication.

Most prescriptions are valid for a maximum of six months from the date they are signed (some can be for less – it’s important you check your prescription very carefully or check with your veterinary practice).
