Expert puppy advice

When can my puppy go outside?

After your puppy has had their full primary vaccinations, they’re safe to take outside and go on walks. Until they’ve been fully vaccinated, avoid contact with other dogs.

How do I socialise my puppy?

Expose them to different people, sounds, pets and places early on. Puppy socialisation classes can also be helpful for them to build up their confidence. These are usually available in local areas by your vet or a dog training facility.

When can I start training my puppy?

Training your puppy can start from day 1. Start with basics like responding to their name, sit, lay down, paw and recall. Keep the sessions short and fun so they stay engaged.

How often do I need to feed my puppy?

Use the little and often rule for feeding. They need to be fed 3-4 times per day until they’re around 6 months old. At this age, you can reduce the meal times down to 2 a day. Always make sure you’re providing them with a complete, age appropriate food for balanced nutrition.

How do I stop my puppy biting and chewing?

Always provide them with plenty of enrichment toys such as chew toys. If they bite, redirect to a toy and stop playing with them. Rough play encourages mouthing and biting, so this should be avoided. Teething peaks between 3-6 months.

How do I toilet train my puppy?

Take them outside frequently, especially after meals, naps and play time. Always praise them when they go outside. Toilet training does require some patience and consistency. Accidents are bound to happen, but they’ll learn.

Help! I think my puppy is unwell.

At such a young age, puppies can deteriorate quickly. If you see any signs that make you think your puppy is unwell, contact your vet immediately.

Puppy Checklist:

Register them at a vet: Make sure you book them in for their first vet check to make sure they’re healthy and discuss their vaccination and flea, tick & worming plan. They’ll also need microchipping (required by law).

A safe and enclosed space: This could be a crate, play pen, or a puppy-proofed room.

Bedding: Something soft for them to cuddle up in that is easy to wash.

Food and water bowls: These need to be separate and would benefit from being non-slip.

Puppy food: Age-appropriate complete food needed. Your breeder should inform you of what they’ve been fed. It’s important to continue to feed them this, and if you want to change their food, this needs to be done gradually over a 10-day period to avoid upsetting their tummies.

Collar and ID tag: Just to be on the safe side in case they go for an unexpected wander, make sure you have an up-to-date contact number on their tag.

Lead and harness: You’ll need these for socialising, training, and taking your pup for a walk.

Car travel accessories: For safe travelling, look for a car crate or restraint.

Puppy safe shampoo, toothbrush & toothpaste: Make sure you get them comfortable and used to cleaning and grooming from an early age.

Training treats: Puppies need positive reinforcement to learn. Make sure you’re rewarding and celebrating the good behaviour! Praise and training treats work wonderfully.

Toys, toys, toys: Puppy enrichment toys and puzzles keep them entertained, in addition to chew toys that are safe for teething puppies.

Poo bags: Puppies are cute and fluffy, but you still need to pick up their poop. Make sure you always have plenty of poo bags.
